Rehabilitation of a Building
Status: Academic Project
Tutors: Xavi Llobet and Eduard Bru
This project constituted the series of “Rethinking Barcelona at All Scales” which consisted of short and fast projects that were reduced to a clear and strong idea that aimed in making city and giving meaning to the built environment by focusing on form, materiality and atmosphere. One of the requirements of this exercise was to be done only by hand.
The Drassanes Reial used to be the Royal Shipyard of the city from the 13th century until the 18th century and it later became a museum which went through a recent rehabilitation in 2014. The museum has its main entrance at the Passeig Josep Carner which is properly connected to its surroundings, but on the other side in front of the Carrer del Portal de Santa Madrona the facades are closed to the street and waste the opportunity to connect with the unused public space in that area. The main idea is to create an exterior extension of the museum to blur the limits between the interior and exterior whilst creating the possibility of new things happening in the space. The characteristic roof is set to be extended and the imponent gothic structure is to be contrasted by a light wooden structure that brings the building to the present while extending the interior feeling of openness in the space.
